Springing from a rich tradition that took root over a century ago, Muskoka Chautauqua traces its origins to the picturesque village of Windermere, where the shores of Lake Rosseau attracted North America’s foremost thinkers. Over the years, Muskoka Chautauqua has evolved into one of the region’s longest-running and iconic cultural institutions, bridging the past with the present in a seamless blend of tradition and innovation.
Nestled amidst the Muskoka Lakes, a mere 5-hour drive from the Chautauqua Institution. In July 1921, Dr. Jesse L. Hurlburt embarked on a transformative journey from upstate New York to Tobin Island, to bear witness to the inaugural season of Muskoka Chautauqua.
In the Chautauqua Daily on July 13th, 1921, Dr. Hurlburt shared his reflections on Muskoka Chautauqua:
“Chautauqua has daughters by the thousand… scattered over the continent, some of them sharing more, others less, of their mother Chautauqua’s features. The youngest of these, not one in a chain of Chautauquas, but independent of all and seeking to follow in the footsteps of the oldest of all, is the Canadian Chautauqua in the Muskoka Lakes. In that series of romantic lakes are more than four hundred islands, and on one of them this new Chautauqua holds its first assembly this summer, beginning July 1, which they celebrate at once as opening day and Dominion Day, and continuing until September 5th. It has a good program, welcomes its visitors at a good hotel, the Epworth, and presents a fine array of speakers. Chautauqua welcomes its Canadian daughter to the family.”
After a period of dormancy, Muskoka Chautauqua has experienced a renaissance, based on the four traditional pillars, renewing its commitment to enriching minds and fostering a strong sense of community. Today, we proudly carry forward the tradition with a diverse program that includes workshops, lectures, performances, and various engaging events on the same shores as the initial Muskoka Chautauqua Assembly. Our mission is to create an immersive experience that seamlessly weaves the spirit of the past with contemporary innovation.
Join us in the heart of Muskoka, where the beauty of nature harmonizes with intellectual, artistic and spiritual exploration.
