Monteagle Assembly

Located In Monteagle, TN

Monteagle Sunday School Assembly (MSSA) dates back to 1882, when the Sunday School Convention of Tennessee created an educational congress for Sunday school teachers. From ancient language to music, Sunday school teachers from across the South attended summer classes at the Assembly to broaden their experience.

In those early years, the Assembly maintained close ties with the first Assembly in Lake Chautauqua, New York. Chautauqua was created to combine the training of Sunday school teachers with a broader range of educational and cultural pursuits, and soon, MSSA was recognized as the southern headquarters for the Chautauqua Literary & Scientific Circle. While many Chautauqua organizations were started by individual church denominations, Monteagle Assembly was ecumenical from the start.

We treasure our sense of history and our commitment to the Chautauqua tradition. Many of our homeowners are fifth- and sixth-generation Assembly families who cherish the rare, lifelong friendships that are grown and nurtured here and the unique opportunities offered each summer season.

It is important to us that visitors come here with an understanding of our purpose and a desire to take an active role in our community. Our robust cottage rental program welcomes those who share our enthusiasm for spiritual and intellectual growth to come explore this truly unique, family-focused experience.
